Hallojis! This week, we’re talking about 10 different ways that you can check your final mix before it goes out into the world. Let’s go.

Context: your mix should translate.

…but what does that mean though?

In short, that means that regardless of what system your song is played back on (everything from your nice mixing headphones to the loudspeaker at your local Target), your song sounds the way you intended it to sound.

Listen to your mix on as many different playback systems as you can.

After each pass, take a few notes, make some small adjustments and repeat.

10 ways to check your final mix

Here are some suggestions on easy ways to check your song—

  1. Studio monitors

  2. Studio headphones

  3. Listening headphones (e.g. AirPods, wired headphones, etc)

  4. Cell Phone Speakers

  5. Mono (aka 1 channel only)

  6. Swap Left/Right Channels

  7. Low Volume

  8. Down the Hall

  9. In a Car

  10. Recruit a Friend

If you want the “ultimate”, fool-proof test of mix translation, hire a professional mix engineer and/or mastering engineer to finalize your track.
